Books
Card, Michael, Scribbling in the Sand: Christ and Creativity. InterVarsity Press, 2002.
One key point that Card makes is that community deeply fosters creativity.
Fujimura, Makoto. Culture Care: Reconnecting with Beauty for Our Common Life. IVP Books. 2017.
"Culture is not a territory to be won or lost but a resource we are called to steward with care. Culture is a garden to be cultivated."
Hazelton, Roger. A Theological Approach to Art. Abingdon, 1967.
Hazelton examines art as disclosure, embodiment, vocation, and celebration. The book is full of thoughtful reflections and useful insights. Highly recommended.
L’Engle, Madeleine. Walking on Water: Reflections on Faith and Art. Waterbrook Press, 1980.
In at least one reader’s opinion, this “at times rambles a bit, but the good parts are fabulous and make this a very worthwhile read.”
McConnell, Jason, ed. Beholding Beauty: Worshiping God Through the Arts.
Beholding Beauty: Worshiping God Through the Arts explores a range of arts and it invites us to engage with the arts and to let ourselves be engaged by them.
O’Connor Flannery. ed by Sall and Robert Fitsgerald. Mystery and Manners. Farrar, Straus & Giroux. 1957.
Essays mixed in usefulness, but the good ones made the book worth reading. These especially stand out:
• “Nature and aim of fiction:”
• “Writing Short Stories”
Schaeffer, Francis A. Art and the Bible. Forward by Michael Card. IVP Books. 1973/2006.
Schaeffer offers an interesting biblical and theological look at why art is important and what distinguishes good art.
Books by authors of The Chrysostom Society include:
A Syllable of Water: Twenty Writers of Faith Reflect on their Art
More than Words: Contemporary Writers on the Works that Shaped Them
